All-sky photograph of the band of the Milky Way, photographed with a special camera which records the entire vault of the heavens. Earth is located in one of the outer arms of the galaxy, & so this picture shows the view looking in towards its bright, star-filled centre in the constellation of Sagittarius, which is seen directly overhead. The diffuse, diagonal band of light stretching from bottom left to upper right is the zodiacal band. The bright star on the horizon at left is Jupiter. The photograph shows about half the galaxy's 100,000 light-year extent.
