Iota Draconis planet. Computer artwork of the massive planet orbiting the red giant star Iota Draconis. The planet has 8.7 times the mass of Jupiter and orbits the star every 1.5 years. The ring system and moons shown orbiting it are hypothetical, but the pattern of stars shown in the background is correct. It may be a brown dwarf (star-like, but too light to undergo fusion) rather than a gas giant. The object was detected by periodic changes in the wavelength of light emitted by the star (Doppler shifts) due to motion caused by its orbiting planet. Iota Draconis is an old star that has used up the hydrogen fuel at its core. It is 100 light years from Earth.
