Extrasolar planet. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) infrared image of planet TMR-1C (white dot, lower left) thrown out of a double star system (upper centre). This is the first direct evidence of an extrasolar planet. TMR-1C appears at the end of a 130 billion mile long filament of light. This may be light reflected from dust and gas left in the planet's wake, or a trail the planet has burrowed" through a dust cloud, allowing light from the stars to shine through. TMR-1C has a mass about three times that of Jupiter, and lies 450 light years away.
