Horsehead nebula. Artwork of the Horsehead nebula which may be seen in the constellation Orion. This dark nebula is formed by the intrusion of a dark dust cloud (B33) into a glowing emission nebula (red, IC 434). Emission nebulae glow because their hydrogen gas is ionised by ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot young stars. These nebulae are around 1500 light years from Earth.
