Emission nebula N11B. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of the N11B nebula, a subsection of the N11 nebula. N11B lies within the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), 160,000 light years from Earth. Nebulae are huge clouds of interstellar gas and dust. This is an emission nebula, a region of starbirth. It glows red due to the ionisation of the hydrogen gas it contains by radiation from hot young stars. At upper right are compact globules of dark dust that house emerging young stars. This nebula has been found to house three successive generations of star formation.
