Dark nebulae. Optical image of dark nebulae seen silhouetted against the emission nebula NGC 7000. A nebula consists of gas and dust. A dark nebula does not emit or reflect light. An emission nebula has been heated by nearby stars until the hydrogen gas in it glows red. Star formation can take place when a nebula collapses. NGC 7000 is around 1600 light years distant in the constellation Cygnus.
