Emission nebulae. Optical image of part of IC1318, a large region of emission nebulae in the sky near the star Gamma Cygni. A nebula consists of gas and dust. An emission nebula has been heated by nearby stars until the hydrogen gas in it glows red. Star formation can take place when a nebula collapses. These nebulae are in the constellation Cygnus, and Gamma Cygni (not seen) is off bottom right.
