Pavo constellation. Optical image of the constellation Pavo, the peacock. North is at top. The bright star just left of centre is the Peacock Star (Alpha Pavonis). At far left are Beta Gruis (orange) and Al Nair (Alpha Gruis, blue, right of and slightly above Beta Gruis) in the neighbouring constellation Grus, the crane. Part of the Milky Way is seen at top right. This is a band of light which crosses the sky formed from the millions of stars in the plane of our galaxy. Grus and Pavo are best seen in early spring from the southern hemisphere.
