Leo the Lion, fifth of the twelve constellations or signs of the Zodiac. The figure of the lion is superimposed on a photograph in which the constellation stars have been enhanced. The stars form two groups, a triangle forming the lion's haunches & tail, & the famous sickle" or reverse question-mark forming the head & mane. Leo's alpha star, Regulus, is at the base of the sickle & seems to be more important in mythology than the lion itself. The Egyptians accorded it power because the annual Nile flood came at the time when the Sun entered Leo. The Sun is in Leo from 23 July to 22 August."
