Voyager 2 image of a crescent Neptune in August 1989. The picture was recorded as the spacecraft sped away on a southward-tending trajectory after its closest approach to the planet during the night of 24/25 August 1989. Looking back from a distance of 900,000 km, Voyager's wide-angle camera saw the whole of the planet's south polar region illuminated. Near the bright limb, clouds located at 71 & 42 degrees south latitude rotate eastwards onto Neptune's night side.
