Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9/Jupiter collision. Infrared images made at different wavelengths of the Impact of Fragment R of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter, 21 July 1994. The wavelengths used are (left to right); 7.85 micron, 10.3 micron and 12.2 micron. The image was made at 07.42 GMT, and shows the fireball on the limb at lower left as a bright spot. The images were made using the Mid Infrared Array Camera (MIRAC) at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), Hawaii.
