Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Infrared image showing a 'splash' (impact site) following the arrival of fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 at Jupiter in July 1994. This image was made using a 2.22 micron filter on a 3.5-metre telescope at the Apache Point Observatory, USA. High cloud features, such as the polar regions and some of the cloud bands above the equator, appear bright. The white spot below centre is the combined impact sites of Impacts D (11.42 GMT, 17 July) and G (07.28 GMT, 18 July). This exposure was made at 05.35 GMT on 19 July, by which point the combined D/G site was over 4000km in diameter.
