Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Infrared image (3.5 microns) taken by the Keck telescope of two impacts (round bright spots at bottom left) between fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter. The comet broke into more than 20 fragments during a close encounter with Jupiter in July 1992. The brightest spot is the aftermath of comet fragment A, the first to collide with the planet on July 16, 1994, at about 10:00 GMT. The other spot is the impact of fragment C. The impacts released energy equivalent to about one million hydrogen bombs. The polar caps and a storm system (centre right) are also visible.
