Jupiter's atmosphere. Coloured Galileo spacecraft image of bands of cloud in an equatorial region of Jupiter's atmosphere; the colours approximate to natural tones. In the lower frame is a boundary between two zones of clouds (red and white). The colours of the clouds depends upon the exact mix of chemicals within them. The clouds are stretched into fine filaments & curls by violent, turbulent winds in the atmosphere. This image was made by combining near-infrared and violet light observed by Galileo's solid state imaging system on 5 Nov- ember 1996 at a distance of 1.2 million kilomet- res. Observations at these frequencies provide in- formation on the clouds' composition and altitude.
