Las Campanas observatory. View of telescope domes at the Las Campanas observatory, Chile. The white buildings seen here contain (from right to left): the du Pont 2.5 metre (m) telescope, the site sur- vey instruments, the University of Warsaw 1.2m telescope (silver dome), the 25 centimetre (cm) astrograph that first discovered supernova 1987A, the University of Toronto 60cm telescope & the Swope 1.0m telescope. Las Campanas is an ideal observatory site because the high altitude (2300m) and the clear air above it mean that atmospheric distortions to incoming light are minimised. The site is operated by the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (OCIW).
