Equatorial armilla used by Tycho Brahe (1546- 1601), after an engraving in Atlas Blaeu" published in Amsterdam in 1665. This instrument was used by Brahe at his observatory on an island between Sweden and Denmark to make the most accurate measurements of the stars possible with the naked eye (to two arc-minutes), only exceeded after the first use of telescopes. Despite this accuracy, many of Brahe's theories suffered from his obstinate belief that the Earth was the centre of the universe, in contradiction with the earlier work of Copernicus. Tycho Brahe's name lives on in 'Tycho's Star', the remnant of the supernova he documented in 1572."
