Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, USA, satellite image. North is at top. The ancient site of Pueblo Bonito is the small semi-circular area at centre. It is surrounded by Chaco Canyon (dark area), and is in New Mexico. The canyon has been eroded from the surrounding highlands (yellow) by its river. Both Pueblo Bonito, and another site (Casa Rinconada, across canyon to the south), are aligned so that sunlight shines on particular areas on important astronomical dates such as the solstices and the equinoxes. Pueblo Bonito (inhabited 850-1145) and Casa Rinconada (1070-1110), were both built by the Pueblo cultures that lived here from the 8th to the 12th centuries. Image obtained by the Ikonos satellite on 7 September 2004.
