The burning wreck of a car, destroyed by a small car bomb. The bomb was detonated on a US Army range to demonstrate the effectiveness of plastic explosives. The steel roof of the car was blown over 30 metres into the air. About 500g of Comp C-4 explosive had been used, similar in effect to the more famous Semtex. A bomb of about this size was used by terrorists to destroy a Boeing 747 airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland, in December 1988 with the loss of 270 lives. The Semtex used in the Lockerbie bomb had been packed into a small tape recorder.
