Pickering Castle, aerial photograph. Pickering Castle was first constructed after the Norman conquest. It was built in the motte and bailey style typical of this period. The central motte (mound) is surrounded by an inner and outer bailey (courtyard). The majority of the stone remains date from the 13th and 14th centuries, though a tower at the original entrance to the castle dates from the 12th century. Photographed in Yorkshire, UK.
