Statue of Liberty. Satellite image of the Statue of Liberty (lower right, white), on Liberty Island in New York Harbour, New York City, USA. Erected in 1886, the statue is 46 metres tall, standing on a 45-metre-high pedestal. The base is star-shaped with 11 points. The statue, made of copper sheets, was designed by the French sculptor F.A. Bartholdi in the form of a woman holding an uplifted torch as a symbol of liberty. Donated by France, it was originally a symbol of republicanism, but it later became a symbolic landmark for immigrants arriving in the USA. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 8 June 2002.
