Refrigerator refuse. Refrigerators and freezers stacked ready for recycling at a refuse disposal site. The machines have their compressors, coolant (refrigerant) and polyurethane foam removed before they are crushed and sold for scrap. The coolants and foam contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals. CFCs are harmful gases that deplete the ozone layer and can trap heat in the atmosphere, which may contribute to the greenhouse effect. Ozone protects life on Earth by blocking the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. International agreements have banned production and encouraged destruction of CFCs. Photographed at Greystone Quarry, East Sussex, England.
