Steel is an alloy of iron with a small percentage of carbon and other elements. Different grades of steel can be made by altering the chemical composition of the metal. The commonest type of steel is carbon steel which accounts for 90% of production. Other types of steel include alloy steel which contains a higher percentage of other metals than carbon steel; High-Strength Low-Alloy (HLSA) steel; stainless steel which is resistant to corrosion and tool steel which is hard-wearing.
