Halibut haul. Fish-eye view of a haul of Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus stenolepis) hanging on a rack in Homer, Alaska, USA. Halibut are the largest of the flatfish, and are an important and delicious food fish. They prefer living on sandy seabeds, and are found as deep as one kilometre down. They mainly eat other fish, although lobsters and squid are also taken. They are themselves eaten by sharks and seals, and of course humans. They have been hunted for centuries by native American Indians. A vitamin-rich oil is obtained from their liver, which can be taken as a dietary supplement.
