Flight simulator weather radar. Simulated weather radar display inside a Boeing 777 aircraft simulator. Aircraft weather radar uses radio frequency ranges that interact strongly with water droplets in storm clouds: X-band (around 8 to 12 gigahertz [GHz]) and C-band (4 to 6 GHz), the latter providing better range but poorer resolution. Circular polarization of the radio waves is used to improve the interaction. Advanced weather radars use the Doppler effect to measure the velocity of droplets, allowing turbulence to be detected directly. The simulator accurately models all the instruments of a real plane.
