Fire extinguisher and smoke alarm. The pressurized cylinder (left) contains a dry chemical powder for use in fighting a fire. Unlike a water-containing fire extinguisher, this one may be safely used on an electrical fire as well as on flammable liquids & gases and paper & fabric. The blue background to the word powder" is used due to a previous British colour-coding standard, although all types of fire extinguishers in the European Union are now red. The smoke alarm (right) is an ionisation type, which detects small particles of smoke in the air. The buttons (centre left of the alarm) are used silence the alarm, which can stop false alarms occurring for example during cooking."
