Protective eye on boat. Eye on the hull of a Maltese fishing boat. A pair of eyes, carved or painted on the prow of a boat, is considered to ward off evil. Objects which serve this purpose are termed apotropaic. The tradition of apotropaic eyes is thousands of years old. It was practiced by the Ancient Greeks, who carved eyes on walls and drinking vessels.
