Aircraft manufacturing. Worker constructing an airplane component. The component is part of the fixed trailing edge secondary structure for the Airbus A380 airplane. This component is made by GKN Aerospace from a composite material based on carbon and glass. Such composite materials are both lightweight and strong. Advanced techniques, such as pre-impregnation (pre-preg) and resin film infusion (RFI), are used to manufacture these components. The Airbus A380, announced in December 2000, will be the largest passenger airliner in the world when it starts commercial flights in late 2006. Successful test flights took place in 2005.
