Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). There are 4 major runways (lower left). The one furthest out from the shore is designated runway 8R/26L and is known as the Reef Runway. It was built in 1977 and was the first major runway that was built entirely offshore. At 3749 metres long, it is an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle. Clouds (across top) and shallow (green) and deeper (blue) waters are seen, as well as the buildings of the city of Honolulu. Ke'ehi Lagoon (triangular) is next to the airport, between it and Sand Island (centre). The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 8 October 2003.
