Speed trap. An automatic camera system used to photograph vehicles which are exceeding a local speed limit. The camera may be triggered by sensors in the road or by a radar device. The camera lens is at top left of the grey box. At bottom right of the box is an electronic flash unit used at night. The photograph shows the number plate of the vehicle, and has details encoded on the frame (time, date, location and speed). The film is recovered and processed at regular intervals, and notices are issued to drivers. The photograph is (as of 1993) admissible in court as evidence in the case of disputed offences. Photographed in England.
