Wearable computer. Sulawesi computing system on a researcher's hip, including a hand-held keyboard and a GPS receiver (upper right). This system aims to define basic speech and network protocols to be adaptable for future uses. It includes a visual output (visor, not seen) and is proactive, sensing the environment to change its input mode or remind the user of tasks. The Sulawesi system is being developed by Adrian F. Clark and his team at the University of Essex, England. Wearable technology aims to develop and integrate computing and mobile phone technology, to design new interfaces, and to miniaturize the devices so that they are worn as normally as today's watches. Photographed in 2002.
