Microscopic pressure sensor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tiny pressure sensor. The circular area at the centre of the sensor rests on a membrane that allows it to measure pressure. The T-shaped indentations (green) are attachment points for a temperature sensor (not seen), which is at the same scale. Miniaturisation of components makes them cheaper, lighter and more efficient. Such sensors could find uses in a wide variety of places, such as automobile engines. This sensor was designed by the German technology company Siemens. Magnification: x22 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
