Brake. Scanning electron micrograph of a micromechanical brake or friction transducer. The brakes are used to slow the movement of the bar at centre. The lines of interlocking teeth at left and right are the electromechanical motors used to power the brake. By passing a current through the teeth that face outwards from the centre of the picture, the teeth facing inwards are drawn in. This brake has been manufactured from a silicon wafer with the same techniques used to make silicon chips. Pure silicon has a elasticity and strength similar to steel.
