A micro-miniature infrared transmitter designed to allow electronic tagging of the African honeybee, seen here mounted for testing on a European drone bee. Signals from the transmitter, detectable up to a mile away, will enable scientists to locate and track swarms of the bee. The technology is a spin-off from noise analysis techniques developed to detect problems in nuclear reactors. The African honeybee, Apis mellifera adansonii, also known as the killer bee, was imported into Brazil in 1956 and has since spread throughout northern South America. Brazil reports that 300-400 human deaths a year are caused by this aggressive insect, so severe and numerous are its stings.
