Variable resistor. Also known as a rheostat, this image shows the internal workings of a variable resistor. When placed in a circuit, electricity travels through the coil and out through the metal pointer (lower right). By turning the central dial, the position of this pointer on the coil can be altered to control the amount of coil, and hence resistance, in the circuit.
