Cog can co-ordinate its hearing and visual systems to pinpoint a noise source. The visual system guides movements of its hand. Cog's hand has a touch-sensitive surface allowing the robot to classify objects that it is holding, adjust its grip accordingly, and tell when the object is slipping. Cog can be used to study how humans learn through interactions with other people. Its body shape and movements are designed to closely resemble a human so that people will naturally act towards it in a human-like way.
