A scientist holding 'Genghis', a robot insect made at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. The scientist is wearing goggles that enable him to 'see' via the photodetectors on the robot's head. The Mobile Robot laboratory at MIT has produced several such robots during nanotechnology and micromechanics research. All of them use what's called 'artificial stupidity' to perform very simple tasks. Genghis, for instance, follows rudimentary logic rules to chase any moving objects which it detects in its vicinity. Future robot insects may be used in industry to make checks and on-the-spot repairs inside otherwise inaccessible machinery.
