Plasma globe. Streamers of light inside a plasma globe. This device comprises a glass sphere filled with gas at low pressure. At its centre is a metal ball (lower centre) which is charged with electricity. When the voltage is high enough, the electricity discharges across the sphere to the glass wall. This ionises the gas along the path the discharge follows, causing it to emit light.
