Molten nuclear waste glass at a temperature of about 1100 degrees F. is poured from a platinum crucible into a steel bar mould. Vitrification is one option for immobilizing nuclear waste in a stable form for eventual disposal. The solid glass bar may be subsequently cut into sections for experiments on water corrosion and to see if any radionuclides leach (dissolve) out. The leachability of the glass might be reduced by altering its chemical composition.
