The objects come from a nuclear reactor. This type of equipment is used to handle highly radioactive objects. The glass screens contain chemicals which block the radiation. The sealed chambers are held at a pressure less than that of the atmosphere to ensure that no radioactive material is released in the event of a breach. Normal materials can be converted into radioactive forms in a reactor when they absorb neutron particles emitted by the fuel.
