Atomic bomb explosion. Mushroom cloud produced by the detonation of XX-29 Easy, a 31-kiloton atomic bomb, on 5 November 1951. This explosion was part of the Buster-Jangle series of atom bomb tests conducted at the Nevada Proving Grounds, USA, in October and November 1951. XX-29 Easy was a weapons-related test of the TX-7E, a Mk-7 bomb protoype. It was dropped from a B-45 plane and detonated at a height of 400 metres above the Nevada desert. The bomb weighed 816 kilograms (kg), and had a composite uranium-plutonium core and 362 kg of high explosive. Atomic or nuclear bombs work by releasing the energy contained in the nucleus of atoms.
