Filtered photograph of part of one of the arrays of solar (photovoltaic) cells at the experimental power station at Kobern-Gondorf, near Koblenz, Germany. The station is operated by Rheinish- Westfalisches Elektrizitatswerk (RWE) as part of a feasibility study on the potential for solar power in Central Europe. In October 1988, twelve months after construction had commenced, the station was operating with a peak power output of 340 kW. Some 10 different designs of solar cell are used; power is fed directly into the local grid. Located above vineyards on the Moselle, the site was chosen for its altitude (no fog), relief, & for ease of connection to the local grid.
