Bioenergy research. Technician holding a sugar solution obtained from sweet sorghum plants. This research is performed to test the performance of sweet sorghum, Sorghum vulgar, as an environmentally friendly source of energy. The sugar solution is transformed through fermentation into ethanol, which has several applications in the transport sector. It may be used as a fuels for engines and as a substitute for lead in petrol. After the extraction of sugars, biofuels such as gas and oil, may be obtained from the dry pulp (bagasse) of sweet sorghum. Such fuels have a very low content of sulphur and nitrogen oxides and are suitable to be used in power stations. The project is funded by the Commission of European Communities.
