Housing estate heated from refuse. Part of the Byker Wall housing scheme, heated by hot water from the Byker Reclamation Power Plant. The estate and Power Plant are in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Some 1700 homes and municipal buildings are heated by boilers linked into the Byker District Heating Network from the refuse Power Plant. The Power Plant (not seen) burns domestic waste which has been sorted, dried, and compressed into RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) pellets. Some 2000 tonnes of refuse are processed per week, to heat the water boilers. In addition, the Byker Reclama- tion Power Plant generates 2.5 Megawatts of electricity for the national grid.
