Star Wars research: a view of the PBFA-1 particle accelerator at Sandia Laboratories. Built in 1978- 1980 & previously used for nuclear fusion research, the accelerator is being renamed Saturn" & will be dedicated to research on America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) - the "Star Wars" program. The 96-foot diameter accelerator will be used to research high-energy, pulsed X-ray beams & perform simulations on the release of high-energy x-rays during nuclear explosions."
