International Space Station (ISS) orbiting above Lake Balkhash (top left) in Kazakhstan. Dark solar panels extend out from the ISS to provide power. The modules (from lower left to upper centre) are Unity, Zarya and Zvezda. A Progress supply ship (upper centre) is docked to the Zvezda module. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA, ESA, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres and will be over 100 metres in length. It has been manned since October 2000 and is scheduled for completion in 2004. Photographed from the orbiting Space Shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-106 (8-20 September 2000) to continue constructing the ISS.
