Fungi in space. German astronaut Hans Schlegel tending an experiment inside the Spacelab D2 science module. This experiment was designed to study the way fungal fruiting bodies develop in microgravity conditions compared with normal Earth gravity. This was expected to give insights into the perception of gravity by fungi and their morphogenesis. Spacelab D2 was carried into orbit during Shuttle Mission STS-55 of 26 April to 6 May 1993.
