Apollo 13 photograph showing John L. Swigert Jr., Command Module pilot. The Apollo 13 mission was launched on 11 Apr, 1979, but was aborted after 56 hours due to loss of pressure in liquid oxygen in the Service module & failure of two fuel cells. In this photo Swigert is shown holding a make-shift device called a mailbox" which the astronauts built themselves. It was used to feed lithium hydroxide, from the Command module cannisters, to the Lunar Module (LM) where it could then absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The asrtronauts could then stay within the LM & use it as a "lifeboat"."
