Native of the island of Malekula. Captain James Cook's second voyage, from 1772 to 1775, was a search for the legendary southern continent. His ship, HMS Resolution, visited a number of islands in the South Pacific. Amongst these was Malekula in Vanuata, New Hebrides, where William Hodges, the voyage's artist, drew this portrait of a male resident. Published in 1777.
