Adipose tissue. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of large fat cells making up adipose connective tissue. The rounded fat cells (pink) are called adipocytes. Connective tissue fibres (yellow) have a supporting function for these fat cells. Almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet. These are among the largest cells in the human body (100-120 microns in diameter); red blood cells are seen on their surface. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin. It functions as an insulating layer and energy store. Magnification: x560 at 6x7cm size. x715 at 4x5"~LANDSCAPE"
