False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a fibroblast cell during the late telophase stage of mitosis (somatic cell division). The two daughter cells remain connected by threads of cytoplasm containing remnants of the mitotic spindle (fine green & yellow threads). Mytosis is a type of cell division in which a single cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. It is the means by which new body cells are produced for both growth and repair. The division of the cell occurs in four stages; prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Magnification: x1700 at 6x7cm, x850 at 35mm size.
